Shell reveals that scientists invented adhesives that can be adsorbed to any object

The clam shell is tightly adhered to rocks, hulls and quay using strong adhesives. The adhesive is water resistant and adheres to irregular objects. Inspired by the strong adhesion of steroids, researchers at Northwestern University in the United States have designed a new type of polymer adhesive that can be adhered to any material such as stone, wood, plastic, and steel. According to experts, unlike most other similar functional materials, the main advantage of this adhesive is that it is easier to make and it is very versatile. The research results were published in the journal Science.
The research team designed this compound to be similar to the active ingredient in tannin extract. Under the right conditions, it can form a very thin polymer film on the surface of any object it attaches to. Whether organic or inorganic materials, new adhesives can adhere. More importantly, the two chemical components contained in amines and catechol can be found in dopamine for neurotransmitters. At an appropriate pH, dopamine self-assembles into polymer chains, forming an adherent film.
This new type of adhesive will allow the surface of any object to be coated with metal or other functional materials, such as materials that make the object antimicrobial or promote the growth of certain types of cells. The film formed by this layer of paint is very thin and therefore does not change the shape of the object to be coated, thus aseptically coating the surgical instrument without impairing its performance. Another application that researchers have been working on is a water purification filter. By making fine pellets coated with adhesive, when the water submerges the pellets, the adhesive absorbs toxic metal species in the water.
The researchers also found that with traditional photolithographic techniques, the adhesive can be etched on a complex environmental surface. After metal salt washing on the surface of the object, the metal will adsorb on the adhesive, which makes it possible to print electronic circuits on any object. By depositing on a flexible substrate, this circuit can be used to make a flexible display.
This new type of adhesive has also attracted great interest from other scientists. Researchers at the University of Michigan intend to use it to make thermoelectric materials that convert heat directly into electricity. These materials must have good electrical conductivity and poor thermal conductivity. By bonding conductive materials such as carbon nanotubes with a new type of adhesive, the adhesive itself can be used as a thermal insulation layer.
However, some scientists pointed out that there are certain limitations to this kind of adhesive. Because, it can only be used in a certain concentration of dopamine and pH conditions.
