Grabit designs robots based on electrostatic principles

Grabit, separated from SRI International, was founded in 2011 and has investors including Nike and Samsung. It uses electrostatic attraction to develop a simple and inexpensive robot. The Grabit robot was demonstrated at the RoboBusiness conference in Boston. This new generation of robots may be used on robots more closely to allow robots to work more closely with humans.
Electrostatic attraction is not suitable for manipulating ultrathin semiconductor materials because these surfaces are usually curved. Grabit pliers use flexible materials with the same electrostatic characteristics. The tool's flexible surface allows it to support more weight than traditional robots that take advantage of electrostatic attraction. This improvement allows the robot to take on new production and work, including handling delicate materials, such as thin semiconductor, advanced solar cells. However, the technology also provides a cheap design to pick up anything, such as fabrics, a pack of potato chips, a 50-pound carton, a sheet of paper, and a cell phone.
