Blackmer Introduces S Series Twin Screw Pumps

Blackmer, a PSG company, said its S-Series twin-screw pumps are designed to optimize the reliability, flexibility, economy, performance and value of critical liquids delivered from ships to tank farms, and will meet the needs of shipyards and shipping companies.

Blackmer's S-Series twin-screw pumps are suitable for loading and unloading of tankers (ship-type shipyards) because of their compact design, consisting of two screws that mesh during operation to form a cavity that seals against the surrounding pump casing.

When the screw shaft is running, the delivered liquid moves axially, helping the liquid to stabilize and continuously transfer to the center of the pump at the discharge port. This method of operation will ensure efficient and near-pulse-free transport of liquids, which is a key consideration for long-distance transport of highly viscous liquids.

Blackmer's S-Series twin-screw pumps feature a timing gear (WTG) construction and a double-suction design with no metal contact between the hydraulic components and axial auto-balance. Since there is no liquid agitation or emulsification shear, it is low in noise and almost pulsating, suitable for conveying corrosive and non-corrosive, low viscosity or high viscosity and clean or abrasive liquids. Other features and benefits of the S-Series twin-screw pump include self-priming, convenient compact design, short-time dry running capability, high suction booster head and constant flow in varying conditions.

Organic Raw Materials

1. Chemistry and application

Bisphenol S (BPS, CAS 80-09-1) consists of two hydroxyphenyl groups connected by a sulfonyl group and has the chemical formula C12H10O4S (Figure 1). BPS has a listed production volume between 1 000 and 10 000 tons per year according to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA 2014). It is used as monomer in synthetic polymers such as polyethersulfone (PES) and polysulfone (PSU) as well as in epoxy resins also used for food contact (Lotti et al 2013, Lotti et al 2011, Liaw 1998 and Gao and Li 2000).

PES has replaced bisphenol A (BPA) based polycarbonates in plastic baby bottles (Simoneau et al 2011). BPA based epoxy resins in cans have been substituted with BPS (Viñas et al 2010). Further, BPS is used in thermal papers (Liao et al 2012) and it has been detected in recycled food carton and food packaging paper (Liao et al 2012).
